Audience members get a close-up look at how jazz guitarists hone their art by watching participants perform and receive feedback from Bollenback.  The presentation will include a Q&A session as well as a short performance by Bollenback, accompanied by Cameron Ralston on bass and Shareef Taher on drums.

The class will be held at the 214 Community Arts Center located near UVA campus.

Reservations are recommended for general admission ($10). Master class participants must pre-register ($30).

The Richardson Guitar Studio and the Charlottesville Classical Guitar Society present a concert with guitarist Paul Bollenback and vocalist Chris McNulty, accompanied by bassist Cameron Ralston and percussionist Shareef Taher, at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.

            Guitarist and composer Paul Bollenback has been described as “an out-of-the-box thinker” (All About Jazz), “a bop-funk hero” (Vintage Guitar Mag), and “one of the leading lights of contemporary jazz guitar” (Jazz Guitar Life.com).  His jazz recordings encompass a range of music from Stevie Wonder to Puccini.  He has performed, recorded and toured with some of today’s best jazz musicians, including Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, David “Fathead” Newman, Jimmy Bruno, Joey DeFrancesco and Sandip Burman.

            Australian-born vocalist and composer Chris McNulty offers “a richly feminine sound, with a dash of sauce” (All About Jazz) and “a finely honed improvisational sensibility delivered with an intense depth of feeling” (Jazz Wise, UK).  Her latest album, Whispers the Heart, was selected by Jazz Journalist Association Critic Nancy Barrell as one of the top 10 albums of 2006.

            McNulty and Bollenback have recorded together on each others’ recent albums and have performed around the world with local and regional guest musicians.  Their performance at 214 Community Arts Center promises Charlottesville area concert-goers a rare opportunity to appreciate internationally touring jazz artists in a small, intimate setting.  214 Community Arts Center is located at 214 Rugby Road (the former location of the Prism Coffeehouse).

Dave has organized and sponsored many classical guitar and lute concerts in Charlottesville over recent years for our enjoyment and enrichment.  He has played guitar since the age of 11 and has played and studied classical guitar since 1972.  He plays guitar and participates in many musical events in and around Charlottesville to assist in education and in support of other local charity and service organizations. 
Dave is the president of the Charlottesville Classical Guitar Society and president of Charlottesville software company Re:discovery Software, Inc.  Dave also serves on the board of the 214 Community Arts Center as the Treasurer

All proceeds from this concert will go to the 214 Community Arts Center. The 214 Community Arts Center was organized to operate a vibrant, non-profit community arts center, particularly focusing on promoting and supporting traditional music and dance and providing opportunities for education, participation, performance, and community outreach.
